We are Kelly and Victoria Strauser of Mayer, MN, a tiny town to the west of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area, about 32 miles west of the Mall of America on Hwy 7. Although we both work full-time in the IT field, we also have backgrounds in biology, Victoria with a Biology degree and Kelly with degrees in both Wildlife Biology and IT. Our foray into the alpaca livestock business all began in the fall of 2007, when we happened to do an internet search on "alpacas" and "farms" and lo and behold, an Upper Midwest Alpacas Farm Tour weekend was coming up that very weekend! We visited about half a dozen farms that first weekend and were both very excited about learning more about alpacas and the alpaca business and how they might fit into our lives.
We both wanted to move away from the hectic rush of the big city, and purchase some land in the country to call our own. We envisioned the vegetable and flower gardens we could have, room for a shop and Kelly's electric vehicle conversion hobby, and also began considering if we wanted any livestock. As we researched we discovered there are some nice tax advantages to owning farm land and livestock (check with your tax authority as to what benefits are available for your region). After more investigation on-line and visiting over a dozen alpaca farms, we were hooked! We bought our first female, Brigid in January of 2008 and boarded her at the farm we bought her from.
In August of 2010 we moved to Mayer, MN, to a two-acre farmette that we quickly got busy readying for alpacas. Just before Halloween we welcomed two of our boys to the farm, Honeywiese and Boo, with Monet arriving shortly after that. Our girls continue to board in Lindstrom for the time being.
