Here are just a few of the many reasons:
- Alpacas have an amazing fleece that is shorn once per year and can be made into many wonderful things, from the ordinary - hats, socks, gloves - to the luxurious - sweaters, blankets and coats.
- Alpacas are generally quite hardy and easy to care for. They eat only about 1/3 the amount of goats and sheep of comparable weights (my fiber boys eat about 1 flake of hay/day each during the dead of winter when there is no pasture forage). Their systems are super efficient at processing hay and grass into energy to live on.
- Alpacas graze without pulling up the grass, and their soft foot pads do not churn dirt into mud. They leave a light environmental "footprint."
- Alpacas use communal "dung piles" which make pasture clean up easy and helps control the spread of parasites.
- But mostly, I raise alpacas because it brings me genuine peace and happiness. When I am with them, even just doing chores, I am completely present. There is no worry from today, yesterday or tomorrow. They bring me into the present moment and give me great feelings of contentment and joy.
- Oh, and have you seen those big brown eyes? Or those crias pronking around the pasture at sunset? Just try not to fall in love, I dare you!
